Why is sunscreen selection so difficult?

This article won’t apply to you if your skin isn’t sensitive and you don’t mind greasy, sticky sunscreen, but for those of you who put those as the top requirements on your sunscreen-selection list, my current favorites might helpful.

I’m not a dermatologist or sunscreen expert, but I’ve tried many SPF potions over the years, and am still puzzled why it’s so difficult to find an acceptable sunscreen. Most result in contact dermatitis on my face and neck, and others have such a sticky, tacky feel that I can’t stand them.

Mineral sunscreens work the best for me. They provide optimal protection and minimize skin irritation. My hubby prefers them, too, although his requirements are a little different. He wants a drier sunscreen that won’t drip into his eyes, and after being diagnosed with a few pre-cancerous cells on his face, he’s following his dermatologist’s advice to pick a high zinc formula.

To simplify our lives, I’ve limited the number of sunscreen brands we’re currently using to just a few.

1. Australian Gold Botanical SPF 70 Mineral Sunscreen

Australian Gold Botanical SPF 70 Mineral Sunscreen has a powdery texture which we like. It has a slight fragrance, but it’s pleasant and not overpowering. This has been our go-to for many years because it covers well and has prevented sunburn.

2. Alba Botanica Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

Alba Botanica Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 is a creamier sunscreen, but it dries down to a light moisturizing texture. It’s fragrance free and you can pick it up at Walmart for under $10.

3. DRMTLGY Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF44

DRMTLGY Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF44 is definitely a more elegant sunscreen, but since it’s intended for the face I think it should be! Applying sunscreen to my face is a daily habit that has paid off in preventing further damage to my delicate facial skin. Finding one that also includes nourishing properties and works well under makeup is worth every penny.

I’ve also tried DRMTLY’s Broad Spectrum SPF 45 sunscreen for a non-tinted option. It’s not 100% mineral, but it has 12% Zinc Oxide and works well for both me and my husband.
